Neora valley National park situated at a distance of 100 kilometres from the gateway of North East Siliguri and its surroundings are truly birding paradise. More than 250 birds’ species are found here. From Common flycatchers, Swallows, laughing thrushes, 3 or more species of woodpeckers and babblers to Great Hornbill, Himalayan Griffon, Redstart, Whistling Thrush, Golden Headed Black Finch and the Khaleej Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, Partridges and Himalayan Monal can be observed here.

Apart from Birdlife with luck one can spot Red Pandas, Moon bears, leopard cats, Himalayan Thar and Serow and flying squirrels here. These areas also host colourful butterflies, beetles, insects and offers one spectacular views of snow capped mountains and Rhododendron forests.

GO offers unique bird photography expeditions in this mystical forest. The rich biodiversity in this thick vegetation land is due to the moisture content in the air. One can feel dense forests of Amazon here. All the destinations are selected as per seasonal activities, habitat and presence of bird life with utmost care under the mentorship of professional Birding guides and locals.

Selection of expedition places -

Laptanchor (Mahananda WLS) - This forest is a perfect combination of riverine as well as mixed dense forest ecosystem. Mainly the birding expeditions are taken place from Sukhna to Latkothi areas. Focused species in this area are Hornbills. 3 species of Hornbills like Rufous necked, oriental pied and great hornbills can be seen here. Adding to that swallow, swift, thrush, babbler, warbler, roller, minivet and sunbird can be found here. With luck one can spot rare and endangered Binturong and species like Moon Bear, clouded leopards here which are extremely rare to sight in daylight.

Lava and Loleygaon (Neora Valley)- lava is situated at one end of Neora valley National Park and Loleygaon is tiny little hamlet in eastern Himalayas under Kalimpong subdivision. Loleygaon attracts various birds due to presence of flowering plants as well as Lava where the main focusing areas to observe are Reli river banks and Dhupi forest. The Jhandi Dhara, VIP Bungalow view point and canopy walks are ideal for birding in this dense forest. Mainly early mornings are spent at these places to view the Kanchenjunga range sunrise. In Lava which is just 10 kms from Neora valley entry points a trek to Samthar plateau to Gompha Dhara can give one sightings of Blue Robins, Fulvetta, Finch, Wren Babblers and many more. Also Changey waterfall is considered to be a healthy place to watch birds.

Kolakham - Kolkaham situated just at the outskirts of Neora valley is birdwatchers paradise. We strictly recommend one to spend a whole at birding in this areas. Birds like rufous-throated partridge, satyr tragopan, crimson-breasted woodpecker, jerdon’s baza, black eagle, dark-throated thrush, chestnut-headed tesia, black-faced warbler, black-headed shrike babbler, maroon-backed accentor, dark-breasted rosefinch, red-headed bullfinch, gold-naped finch can be find here. This area also holds significant population of colourful butterflies and beetles.

All birding expeditions to Neora valley national park takes in between September to March months of each year. September to November and February March months are considered to be ideal due to autumn and spring season when flowers blossom. Travelling in rainy season is strictly avoidable along with summers. Winters tastes the physical strength of a Bird watcher with extreme weather conditions and due to fog a traveller losses morning prime time inside forest.
