One of the great expeditions that is on GroupOutings card is the SNOW LEOPARDS Expedition in the relatively unknown KIBBER/KYIBAR Wildlife Sanctuary. Kibber wildlife sanctuary is one of world's highest sanctuary situated at the cold deserts of East Karakoram and Himadri range at Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Kibber has one of the world's highest motorable roads along with its surrounding villages of Gete, Tashigang, Langcha, Kye, Hikkim and Komic villages which are inhabited by Gyeuk Pa sect of people who follows Buddhism. The famous Monk Richeng Po is believed to be the early resident of this region.
Snow leopard adventure starts from the Indian city of Shimla, capital of Himachal Pradesh. From Shimla 3 days long road trip leads us to Kibber village which is at an altitude of 14,000 feet. The road journey is itself a lifetime experience where one will travel through 6-10 feet tall Ice walls, spend nomadic nights at monasteries, devour star-filled sky. The Hindusthan - Tibet road or NH 22 on which the team travels is among the world's most treacherous roads and the views are breathtaking. On can witness apple orchards of Kinnaur, Indias one and only Mummy at GUE, century old mud made Tabo and Dhankhar monastery, frozen Nako and Dhankhar lake, Blue rivers of pin and Spiti and their confluence near Attargo and Schilling if weather permits. You get a lifetime opportunity to click award winning star trails and Landscape photographs from these places.
Month of December to March is the ideal season to track Snow leopards in their wild habitat as spotting pug marks on the Snow will be relatively easy. Apart from Snow leopards, our focus will be on Red Fox, Ibex, blue sheep, varieties of birds, landscapes and discovering the overall flora and fauna of this region. An additional trip to the Pin Valley National Park can lead us to Tibetan wolf, brown and black bears.
This expedition will be guided by seasoned naturalists who are locally based at district headquarters KAZA. The spotting of GREY GHOST is relatively easy in this fossil land as the elusive cats cannot hide their footprints in deep snow and faces a scarcity of food in upper regions. They prefer to stay close to villages for food and warmth. Using long focal length lenses is must for photographing animals in this cold desert and with all necessary permissions if obtained from government authorities one can use night vision cameras and also set camera traps.
N.B. - As this is a high altitude expedition of a critically endangered species, the spotting of snow Leopard is purely dependent on luck. GroupOuting™ will try its best to trace the leopard while at the same time ensuring that our guest stay physically fit to sustain this difficult expedition.
